30 Questions to Ask Your Kids at Dinner Tonight
===============================================

By Mark Hudson · 03 June, 2026

Dinner time can be one of the few moments each day when families get to slow down and connect. If you're tired of asking "How was your day?" and getting a one-word answer, these fun questions can help start conversations, create laughter, and strengthen family bonds.

![30 Questions to Ask Your Kids at Dinner Tonight](https://assets.caresies.io/articles/209/conversions/M8JXxtDTlotEvdOjZQNS-webp-featured.webp)

You know the script. You ask "how was your day?" and you get a shrug and a "fine," and then everyone goes back to their plate. For something that is meant to be family time, dinner can get pretty quiet pretty fast.

The fix is almost embarrassingly simple. Ask a better question. Not a deeper or more serious one, just a more interesting one. The right prompt can turn a silent table into ten minutes of genuine laughter, and occasionally into something you did not see coming.

Here are 30 to keep up your sleeve.

Why bother?
-----------

Because those small, ordinary moments add up. Regular chats over dinner help kids build confidence, get better at putting their thoughts into words, and feel closer to the people they live with. None of that needs a special occasion or a parenting course. It just needs a bit of space and a question worth answering.

So next time you are all sitting down, pick one of these and see where it goes.

The silly ones
--------------

Start here if the mood is flat or the little ones are restless. Nonsense questions get everyone talking before they realise they are talking.

1. If animals could talk, which one would be the funniest?
2. If you could have any superpower for one day, what would it be?
3. What would you do if you woke up invisible?
4. If you could invent a new ice cream flavour, what would it be?
5. If your toys came alive at night, what do you reckon they would get up to?
6. What would happen if kids were in charge of the world?
7. If you could have any animal as a pet, what would you pick?
8. If you could make one rule for your school, what would it be?
9. What would your dream treehouse look like?
10. If you could swap places with Mum or Dad for a day, what would you do?

The imagination ones
--------------------

These are great for the kid who lights up when they get to build a whole world in their head. Do not rush them.

1. If you could go anywhere in the world tomorrow, where would you go?
2. If you found a treasure map, what would you hope was buried?
3. If you could visit another planet, what would it be like there?
4. If you could invent a brand new holiday, how would people celebrate it?
5. If you wrote a book, what would it be about?
6. If you ran your school, what would you change first?
7. If you could build anything at all, what would you build?
8. What would your dream birthday party look like?
9. Which fictional character would you most want to meet?
10. If you designed your own playground, what would be in it?

The thoughtful ones
-------------------

Save these for a calmer night, or for when you actually want to know what is going on in their world. Answer them yourself too. Kids open up faster when they are not the only one being asked.

1. What was the best part of your day?
2. What made you smile today?
3. Did someone do something kind for you today?
4. What is something you are proud of this week?
5. What would you like to get better at?
6. Who is someone you really admire, and why?
7. If you could help one person tomorrow, who would it be?
8. What are you looking forward to?
9. What makes someone a good friend?
10. What is one thing you are grateful for today?

A few things that help
----------------------

There is no right answer to any of these, which is the whole point. You are not running a quiz, you are just getting people talking. A handful of things make it land better.

Let everyone have a go at the same question, parents included. Resist the urge to correct or improve an answer, even a ridiculous one. And when something interesting slips out, follow it with a simple "why?" or "tell me more" and then go quiet and let them run with it.

Some nights this will last about ninety seconds before someone asks for seconds. Other nights it will still be going long after the plates are cleared. Both are a win.

The point of it all
-------------------

Close families are not built on big trips or grand gestures. They are built on hundreds of small, ordinary moments like this one, repeated until they become how you talk to each other.

So tonight, pick one question and give it a go. You might be surprised by what you hear.

And if keeping the household running smoothly includes a nanny, [Pay The Nanny](https://paythenanny.com.au/) takes care of the payroll and compliance side, so you have more time for the dinner table.
