DIY Payroll vs a Nanny Payroll Service: The EOFY Reality Check
==============================================================

By Mark Hudson · 07 July, 2026

EOFY always gets families thinking about whether DIY nanny payroll is still worth it. This year the timing matters even more. Payday Super landed on 1 July, and it changes the maths for anyone still running their nanny's pay through a spreadsheet.

Every EOFY, a few thousand Australian families sit down and ask the same question. Is doing my nanny's payroll myself actually worth the hassle?

Most years, that question was mostly about time. This year it's also about a genuine legal shift. Payday Super came into effect on 1 July 2026, and if you're still managing payroll yourself, it's worth understanding exactly what's changed before you decide whether to keep going it alone.

What Payday Super Actually Means For You
----------------------------------------

Until this month, employers paid super quarterly. You had until 28 days after each quarter ended to get the money into your nanny's fund, so a late January contribution wasn't technically due until the end of April.

That buffer is gone. Under [Payday Super](https://paythenanny.com.au/articles/payday-super-for-nannies), you now need to pay super at the same time as wages, and it has to land in your nanny's fund within seven business days of payday. Not seven days to send it. Seven days for it to actually arrive.

That's a much tighter window, and it changes how often you need to think about super. If you pay your nanny fortnightly, you're now managing 26 super payments a year instead of four. Miss the window and you're looking at the Superannuation Guarantee Charge, which isn't tax deductible and comes with its own penalties on top.

There's a bit of good news buried in here too. The ATO has published a first year compliance approach running from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027, which gives some leeway if you're genuinely trying to pay on time and something goes wrong on the fund's end. It's not a free pass though, and it only helps if you can show you made a real effort. For a family running payroll manually alongside a full time job, that's a hard thing to prove after the fact.

The Small Business Super Clearing House Is Gone Too
---------------------------------------------------

If you were one of the families using the ATO's free Small Business Superannuation Clearing House, that's now closed to anyone who wasn't already using it, and existing users lose access from 30 June 2026. You'll need a new way to get super into your nanny's fund, and it needs to be fast enough to hit the seven day window.

For a single household employer, that's a real gap to fill. It's exactly the kind of thing a [nanny payroll service](https://paythenanny.com.au) is built to absorb, because we've already made the switch across our whole client base rather than each family needing to sort it out on their own.

Where This Leaves DIY Payroll
-----------------------------

None of the old DIY payroll tasks have gone away. You're still calculating wages, working out PAYG withholding, tracking leave accrual, and lodging Single Touch Payroll. Payday Super just adds a much less forgiving deadline on top, at exactly the time of year families are already stretched thin with EOFY paperwork.

The families who come to us mid-year usually aren't chasing something dramatic. It's smaller things that pile up. A super payment that went out a few days late because the school holidays got in the way. A leave balance that's been quietly wrong since a pay rate changed eighteen months ago. None of it looks urgent until an employee resigns, or the ATO sends a letter.

Where the Real Cost Sits
------------------------

DIY payroll feels free because there's no invoice. But once you add up a payroll subscription, the hours spent working out what Qualifying Earnings actually covers under the new rules, and the odd afternoon spent fixing something that went wrong three pay cycles ago, the gap to a proper nanny payroll service is usually smaller than families expect.

There's also a cost that doesn't show up on a spreadsheet at all, which is knowing your nanny's pay, leave and super are correct without having to double check it yourself every fortnight.

What We Do at Pay The Nanny
---------------------------

We're a household payroll service, not a piece of software you have to operate yourself. Our team runs your nanny's wages, leave accruals, STP reporting and now Payday Super compliant super payments, all inside one pay run, timed to hit the new seven day window every time.

If you've been putting off sorting out Payday Super, EOFY is a good moment to hand the whole thing over rather than bolt another obligation onto a system you're already managing manually. You can read more about how the [ATO's Payday Super changes](https://www.ato.gov.au/businesses-and-organisations/super-for-employers/about-payday-super) apply to household employers, or get in touch and we'll take it from here.
