The Hidden Benefits of Being Paid Properly as a Nanny in Australia
==================================================================

By Mark Hudson · 02 July, 2026

Getting paid isn't just about receiving money in your bank account. A professional payroll gives you superannuation, leave entitlements, payslips, proof of income and important legal protections. Here's why every Australian nanny should be paid properly.

![The Hidden Benefits of Being Paid Properly as a Nanny in Australia](https://assets.caresies.io/articles/212/conversions/CMMeBnSdz47ZrYB8NnL7-webp-featured.webp)

Most nannies compare roles on the hourly rate first. Fair enough - it's the number you see in the ad. But the rate on its own doesn't tell you much about what the job actually adds up to over a year, or five years.

Being employed properly, through a real payroll system rather than a cash-in-hand or informal bank transfer arrangement, comes with financial security and legal protections that a lot of nannies simply aren't getting. And most don't realise what they're missing until they need it.

Here's what proper payroll actually gets you.

Superannuation that actually turns up
-------------------------------------

Super is the one that costs you the most if it's skipped, because you don't feel the loss today - you feel it decades from now.

If you're engaged as an employee (rather than genuinely running your own business as a sole trader), your employer is generally required to pay super guarantee contributions on top of your wages, in line with Australian super rules. Paid consistently, that adds up over the course of your career into a meaningful chunk of retirement savings.

Cash arrangements are exactly where this quietly falls through the cracks. No payslip, no super guarantee, and often no one even checking.

Annual leave and sick leave that's actually tracked
---------------------------------------------------

Permanent nannies are generally entitled to paid annual leave and paid personal (sick and carer's) leave under Australian employment law.

That means you can take a holiday, or stay home when you're unwell, without it costing you a week's pay. The catch is that leave only works if someone's tracking it properly. With correct payroll, your accrued leave sits right there on your payslip - you can see exactly what you've built up, rather than taking a family's word for it (or hoping they've kept a note somewhere).

A proper payslip, every pay run
-------------------------------

A payslip isn't just paperwork for the sake of it. Each one should show:

- Hours worked
- Gross and net pay
- Tax withheld
- Super contributions
- Leave balances
- Any allowances or deductions

Having that laid out every fortnight (or however often you're paid) means you can actually check the numbers add up, instead of just trusting that they do.

Something to show when someone asks for proof of income
-------------------------------------------------------

You'll be asked to prove your income more often than you'd expect - and "I get paid in cash by a lovely family in Bondi" doesn't cut it. Real payslips matter when you're:

- Applying to rent a property
- Going for a home loan
- Financing a car
- Applying for government payments or assistance
- Working through a visa or immigration application

Without them, you're stuck explaining an income you can't actually document.

A real employment history
-------------------------

Nannying is real work, and it should build a real employment record - the kind you can point to later.

Being paid through payroll gives you documented, verifiable employment history: dates, hours, role, the lot. That matters when a future employer wants to check your background, and it makes updating your resume a lot less painful than trying to reconstruct years of cash jobs from memory.

Workers' compensation cover
---------------------------

This one rarely crosses anyone's mind until it's needed. If you're injured on the job, workers' compensation can help cover medical costs and lost income - but only if your employer has actually met their obligations and you're covered in the first place.

Nobody plans for an injury. Still, knowing you're covered if one happens is worth more than people give it credit for.

Families who do payroll properly tend to be better to work for
--------------------------------------------------------------

There's a pattern here worth naming: families who set up proper payroll are usually families who take the employment relationship seriously across the board.

In practice that looks like clean records, correct tax withheld, super paid on time, leave properly tracked, and pay that actually turns up when it's supposed to. It also means you're not stuck having awkward conversations about pay calculations or entitlements - because the system's already handling it, and you can both get on with the actual job: looking after the kids.

The takeaway
------------

Getting paid properly isn't really about the payslip itself. It's about the protection sitting behind it - the super building in the background, the leave you can actually take, the income you can prove when it matters.

At Pay The Nanny, this is what we set up for families every day: accurate payroll, proper payslips, correct tax and super, leave tracking, and support when questions come up. It's how employment should work.

If you're talking pay and conditions with a family, it's worth pointing them to [Pay The Nanny](https://paythenanny.com.au/). Less admin for them, and for you - a proper, documented job you can actually rely on.
