Parenting in the Age of Smart Devices: How Much Screen Time is Too Much?
========================================================================

By Mark Hudson · 22 October, 2025

Screens are everywhere, from TVs to tablets to smart fridges that tell us when the milk’s out. But how much screen time is too much for kids? Let’s unpack what the experts say, what’s realistic for parents, and how to find a balance that works for your family.

When “screen time” meant Saturday morning cartoons
--------------------------------------------------

Remember when “screen time” was an hour of Saturday morning cartoons while you munched Weet-Bix on the couch? Today, kids are surrounded by screens from sunrise to bedtime, including learning apps, Netflix, FaceTime with grandparents, and the occasional YouTube rabbit hole featuring dancing cats.

The challenge for modern parents isn’t whether screens are part of childhood (they are), it’s figuring out how much is okay and what kind of screen time actually helps instead of harms.

What experts recommend
----------------------

According to the Australian Government’s Department of Health, the guidelines for recreational screen time are:

- Under 2 years: No screen time (other than video calls with family)
- 2 to 5 years: Up to 1 hour per day
- 5 to 17 years: Up to 2 hours per day, outside of school or homework time

(Source: [Australian Department of Health](https://www.health.gov.au/topics/physical-activity-and-exercise/physical-activity-and-exercise-guidelines-for-all-australians/for-children-and-young-people-5-to-17-years))

That might sound achievable in theory, but in practice? When you’re juggling work, dinner, and the bedtime chaos, handing over the iPad can sometimes feel like a survival strategy, and that’s okay.

Why screen time isn’t all bad
-----------------------------

Not all screen time is created equal. There’s a big difference between a three-hour cartoon binge and using an educational app that teaches problem-solving or creativity.

**1. Active screen time** (where your child is learning, creating, or interacting) can actually build skills and boost confidence.

**2. Passive screen time** (like endless scrolling or background TV) tends to just fill time, often at the expense of sleep or play.

The trick is finding a healthy mix that fits your family’s lifestyle.

Tips for finding balance
------------------------

1. Create screen-free zones. Keep mealtimes, bedrooms, and family outings device-free. It sets clear expectations without constant battles.
2. Lead by example. If your kids see you scrolling TikTok through dinner, they’ll think it’s normal. Model the balance you want them to learn.
3. Use timers. Built-in screen time limits or old-fashioned kitchen timers can take the emotion out of switching off.
4. Swap screen time for outdoor time. Encourage breaks with walks, backyard play, or time at the park. Fresh air still beats Fortnite.
5. Plan digital downtime. Make Sunday mornings or school nights device-free. You might be surprised how quickly kids adapt once it becomes routine.

When you need an extra pair of hands
------------------------------------

Sometimes, screen time creeps up simply because parents are stretched thin. Between work, chores, and a never-ending to-do list, there aren’t enough hours in the day to supervise everything.

If you find yourself relying on screens just to get through the week, it might be time for extra help. A nanny or in-home carer can make a big difference, giving your kids more time for real-world play, craft, and outdoor adventures while freeing you up to focus on work or rest.

And while we don’t hire nannies, we make paying them easy. [Pay The Nanny](https://paythenanny.com.au/For-Families) handles all the payroll, tax, and super so you can focus on family life, not admin.

Final thoughts
--------------

Screens aren’t the enemy. They’re simply part of modern parenting. What matters most is balance, connection, and using tech intentionally rather than reactively. Some days that balance will be perfect, and some days you’ll hand over the tablet and pour yourself a cuppa. That’s okay too.

Because at the end of the day, parenting isn’t about perfection. It’s about doing your best, with or without Wi-Fi.
